Renovated House
Originally the gardeners house for the botanical garden of the University of Leeds a developer had split up the site, renovated the house leaving a plain turfed rectangle outside space. The space was the full width of the house, but not very deep with a wooden fence running along the boundary of the site, the main view from the house. A driveway for car parking was also sited in the garden and overlooked from more than one angle. I wanted to soften the hard boundaries and reflect the history of the garden with a cottage style planting scheme. I planted larger shrubs along the back boundary to provide privacy and to screen the fencing.
To make the garden more appealing to wildlife I added a pond, with stones for shelter and graded so creatures could get in and out easily. Running alongside the drive I planted a small row of semi dwarf fruit trees to provide free fruit and to screen off cars from the garden.
