“Working with Claire has been an absolute pleasure! She has an encyclopaedic knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for all things gardening!”
This courtyard garden behind a cottage had been hard landscaped with empty flower beds requiring planting up. The client wanted a Mediterranean style garden, that would require little maintenance or gardening knowledge. I chose an evergreen, hardy but drought tolerant planting scheme that wouldn’t need a lot of pruning or maintenance. The garden is surrounded by fencing so I used this as an additional area to plant up, to cover the fences and blur the boundaries with climbers.

The above right hand photo shows most of the planting in place, a pergola was still to be installed and the climbers for the fencing hadn’t been planted. The planting can take a few years to establish and fill out and even then plants may be moved, removed or replaced. There’s always an element of seeing how happy the plants are where they’ve been planted and one of the joys of gardening is the many possibilities.

The turf laid prior to the project was removed and a gravel garden laid with drought tolerant, low maintenance plants. The gravel was extended around the existing herbs and up to the fence to make the space feel larger.
