Lovely detached cottage surrounded by mature gardens, set in the Suffolk countryside. The garden is split into 3 distinct parts, each one had become extremely overgrown with thick brambles, nettles and bindweed. The brief was to revive the garden with low maintenance planting in a cottage garden style. There were a lot of elements in the garden to consider including a bank, large trees, parterre, paths, ponds and arches but working closely with the client the gardens were planted up with new plants and slightly restructured to improve how the gardens looked and are used.
The left image shows the overgrown path. And after clearing the large shrubs and weeds an arch was re-sited from elsewhere and a birdbath installed at the end of the path creates a focal point. A neat evergreen hedge of euonymus was planted to define the path and create a formal contrast to the rest of the planting which was more relaxed in style.
This windy bank was very overgrown with a collapsing stone wall. The stones from the wall were reused to create a rockery at one end and the stone wall was replaced with solid sleepers to retain the bank. The brambles and nettles were cleared and the bank replanted with a mix of grasses, ferns and roses.
